The annual Kirkjubaejarklaustur Chamber Music Festival was founded by pianist Edda Erlendsdóttir, who was the artistic director from the beginning until the year 2006, when mezzo-soprano Gudrún Jóhanna Ólafsdóttir took over.

More than a hundred international musicians have performed in the festival since its first edition on 16 to 18 August 1991. The concerts have been very popular over the years, attracting a steady audience. In the line of the festival’s aim to promote creativity it has commissioned several new pieces from Icelandic composers to be premiered there and many of the concerts have been recorded by the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service. The festival, which is organized by The Skaftárhreppur Cultural Committee, gives people a good chance to enjoy classical music and the beauty of nature in the same place.
